There was a lot of time to think in the Nexus. He’s still wound up by the Doctor and what he had said. So he had read minds without permission. So what? He stopped people who were murderers and worse. It was a gift deep in his blood and impossible to get rid of and yet the old man acted like it was something that could have been taken away with the right tools. He couldn’t even fully control it, even now. If he took his mask off, every damn whisper came in, so it wasn’t even his most useful power at times. He had moved machines larger and heavier than some of the largest animals without even trying. Still could.
Then when did that go wrong? Was it Skull Face? The KGB? FBI? Somewhere he started to slip and get bitter and angry and he stopped caring like he used to. He sighed and leaned on a shovel he had brought up with him. People died because of him in the past. Good people. Bad people. People who were in a wrong crowd. He got okay with that, sought it out, and lived it as his whole world. Liquid wanted that of him and he fed into that relationship like it was nothing.
So what went wrong? Was he that depressed and bitter about it? Absolutely, but it felt like more than that. Mantis looked around at the planters and the unopened potting soil and sighed. He flicked one hand vaguely and a CD player started blasting music from the rooftop of his apartment building. He bobbed his head a little and laid down right by the edge, getting a good look at the ground from where his head and an arm dangled over a little. The shovel hung lazily in mid-air and did an awkward dance as he flicked his fingers and hand around.
“At what point does violently lashing out stop being trauma and start becoming a personality?”

Date: 2020-06-28 02:55 am (UTC)Ben had promised Mantis that he would come and visit for housewarming, so he came along. He hadn't needed to use his powers to recognize the similarities between them. He listens to the question, his expression turning more sober.
"You know, sometimes I ask myself the same thing. When I look at how it all began, I didn't want to kill people at first. But I did. It got easier as time went on, and I was good at it. My anger and my pain were taken out on others for years and years. I'm trying not to be the same person I was then, but it's something I worry about." He takes a seat, sizing up the apartment. "I was told it was a disrespect to my powers to use them casually, though I'll admit I don't understand why."

Date: 2020-06-28 03:05 am (UTC)"That might just be how it goes when you're forced to kill to defend from a young age. It desensitizes you in a bad way and you can't really stop yourself." He sits up a little and lets his arms rest on his lap. "At first it was self defense and being forced to do it, but at some point I did it because I wanted to. I can't remember when the change happened anymore."

Date: 2020-06-28 04:13 am (UTC)"Welcome to the neighborhood, then." He shuffles, making space for Mantis to join him. "Sometimes I meet people here who are like me, or how I used to be. They're making my mistakes. I feel some sympathy for them, even if I know they won't return it. I wouldn't have back when I was at my worst - I thought love and compassion were a weakness."

Date: 2020-06-29 02:53 am (UTC)Mantis moves to sit closer to Ben, but still minds to keep some space between them. "I still don't know if I want to deal with love or compassion. It isn't that I can't feel them, but they're so...alien. I think there's all of two people I have ever met that I can spare such feelings for."
no subject
Date: 2020-06-29 05:06 am (UTC)He gives Mantis his space out of respect. "My feelings were twisted for a long time. I felt the things you're talking about, but I thought I had to crush them and kill them. I'm trying to learn a new way of doing things. Still...there are only a few people here I'd call my friends. I don't give my trust lightly, but I consider you one of them." Ben decides to change the subject to something a little brighter. "You mentioned mincemeat pie the last time we talked. What do you say about something to eat?"

Date: 2020-06-29 04:51 pm (UTC)Mantis perks up hearing Ben call him a friend, only to relax more as he finishes the thought. Meat pie might be a nice way to cool off and get some energy. He stands up, dusting off his clothes as he does so. It sounded so familiar when Ben spoke of the lack of trust in others. Mantis himself only had one real friend in life who lasted to the very end. "Work can wait a little longer. I might just finish this all at night with how the heat is."
no subject
Date: 2020-06-29 05:03 pm (UTC)Ben smiles slightly, but it's sincere. "That's a good idea. Some dinner might help us feel better - you know, I've never had meat pie before. As I said before, though, I'm not a picky eater." He figured most of his other friends were busy with their own lives, but he's been to visit Galahad and Beelzebub. "I'll have some, and tell you what I think."

Date: 2020-07-01 03:58 pm (UTC)Not that he's one to talk, being someone who absolutely started messes in the past, but he had as much a right to complain as anyone else. "You'll like the way I do it. I make them small so they cook faster. All it takes is some spiced meat and a crust on top to keep it all in. He beckons for Ben to follow. "Should have something to drink that will go well with it."

Date: 2020-07-01 05:03 pm (UTC)He doesn't judge most people who aren't actively causing trouble, glass houses and stones, but the Joker is an exception. At least the Fallen had motivations that could be understood and even respected. Poisoning people for the joy of it is a step too far even for the former Kylo Ren.
He follows Mantis's gesture. "I haven't had pie here before, but the way you described it before made me interested. What kind of drinks do you have that I can try? I can do alcoholic or non-alcoholic, though my powers mean I try to keep the former to a reasonable level. The Force and alcohol don't always mix well."

Date: 2020-07-02 01:09 am (UTC)"Some people are better off dead. God knows plenty back home wished I were dead."
Mantis heads down the steps from the roof towards his apartment. The earthy smell lingers, even indoors. He unlocks one of the apartment doors and leaves the door open once he steps inside. The apartment is sparsely decorated for now, but there's a rug on the floor of the living room and a couch on top of it. The table next to it has a small stack of notebooks and a cup filled with markers, pens, and pencils. He darts into the kitchen, scattering a short beaded curtain.
"Have a seat. I'll get us both some water and get started on the filling."

Date: 2020-07-02 03:13 am (UTC)Ben wonders if his powers would give him a workaround to cloaking technology, but he's not about to try that out.
He follows Mantis into his apartment, looking around as he enters. "I imagine there aren't too many people mourning me where I'm from, either. But a handful of people there know I'm alive here. We all agreed it's better I live in secret." Ben gives his friend a wry smile. "At least I finally made people happy."
He takes a seat, watching while Mantis gets the water. "Winters can get nasty here, I've heard, so growing your own food is a good idea."

Date: 2020-07-02 03:27 am (UTC)"There's only a few people who thought remotely well of me, but they're all as dead as I am." He pulls a pitcher from his fridge and floats two glasses from a cabinet that opened its door on its own. "That said...There's one girl who's still alive that I pay some attention to. She's wrapped in her own world of technology, but it's fascinating to see what she tries to come up with."
A single glass of water makes its way into the living room and settles on the table. With the water taken care of, Mantis removes a small parcel of meat from the fridge and retrieves a somewhat large mixing bowl in addition to a few small bottles. Meat and spices go into the bowl, leaving Mantis free to wash his hands of dirt.

Date: 2020-07-02 06:47 am (UTC)"There's one person here who thought well of me at the end. You might meet her, if you stick around me long enough. Her powers are very similar to mine." There are Ben's parents, too, but he's cautious around them. He doesn't want them to know who he is for their sakes.
He settles down to wait for the pie, letting the water settle. Ben's not very thirsty, but it'll go well with the meal proper. He remembers the Doctor scolding him for using his powers casually - he was a little confused, since it wasn't causing any harm. Where he would have been surprised to see someone with Force-like powers as a new arrival, he's adjusted to it now.

Date: 2020-06-28 11:02 am (UTC)He stood at the top of the apartment on the hot day, hands clasped behind his back watching what Mantis was doing. The man seemed to be an avid gardener. Or, was this perhaps a newly found hobby? Loki never sold popsicles before coming to the Nexus, so perhaps this was something Mantis wanted to try. The shovel hanging in the air caught Loki's eye, as he smiled slightly at the way the man controlled it.
"That is a good question."
Loki paused wondering if he should continue on the subject or try to lighten the mood a little. He could almost sense a palpable feeling of anger from the other man. Irritation? Perhaps.
"I am pleased you found somewhere to stay, Mantis. Are you an avid gardener?"

Date: 2020-06-29 02:59 am (UTC)"Hardly. I don't yet know how well it will work, but I wanted to keep a supply of food nearby. There's a lot of plants and herbs that can be grown in and on top of a home. If my luck goes well, I will have fruits and vegetables with seasonings to keep me going into the fall."
There was still so much to do. He wasn't even done with the soil, and the seeds were mocking him. Mantis made a beckoning motion with his dangling hand.
"Come up here. We don't have to shout and you can see the view."

Date: 2020-07-01 06:48 pm (UTC)"You are a wise man, Mantis. Back on Asgard we often stored food during the summer to eat during the harsh winter months."
Loki's eyes skimmed over where Mantis had worked on his various fruits and vegetables. A worthy endeavour indeed. Who knew what he was growing within the seed beds but it would hopefully yield a healthy crop.
"What sort of fruits and vegetables are you growing?"

Date: 2020-07-02 01:51 am (UTC)"I learned to grow my own food when I was little. It was always in the context of watching other people doing the prep work and then I helped with planting and harvests."
He lifts a hand up, pulling forth a new pile of soil to be dispersed. It tips out, seemingly on it's own, into several containers that have yet to be filled.
"I'm growing...potatoes, spinach, carrots, beets, ginger, garlic..." He counts off the plants on his fingers. "I think there's pumpkins too. Strawberries, blackberries, peppers, chilis, and some other stuff that I'm forgetting."

Date: 2020-07-11 06:57 pm (UTC)Loki walked over to see where he was indicating and realised just how much work the man must have put in to reap such a reward. All hard work and hardly a spot of magic involved. Just perhaps the use of the floating trowel or maybe some other tools but the man could not easily summon vegetables like Loki. This was real dedication. The God of Mischief would not have been so swayed to get down and dirty with pots, soil and hard work. Princes of Asgard rarely did such things.
"Pumpkins? Will you grown them large in time for Halloween? I've heard mortals regard the Autumn festival of the dead in high regard."

Date: 2020-07-13 04:07 pm (UTC)"I've thought about maybe bringing in an apiary or two. Fresh honey is good to have for food and medicine." Not that he'd have any clue in this moment on how to do it right, but it is an idea.
He laughs at the suggestion of Halloween. "I was going to harvest the seeds to leave in packets around town along with Jack-O-Lanterns. Maybe turn a few into pies to hand out to friends like you."

Date: 2020-07-15 04:56 pm (UTC)Loki was no witch doctor or healer but he learnt enough magic from Frigga to treat mild injuries and knew a few herbal remedies. Yes, he was a form of witch and was proud of the fact that he could use magic amongst his people, even though he was shunned for it. Men were supposed to be tough warriors not simple magic wielders. That was for the women.
"My people often shunned me for my use of magic. You see boys are supposed to grasp a sword or axe before they can walk. I chose magic and the comfort of grasping herbs instead of a weapon."
Of course, Loki was skilled with knives, but that was after his magic. He summoned them so they weren't a fixture of his armour unlike Thor's hammer which was strapped to his wrist at all times. As for the promise of pies, Loki's eyes lit up.
"Pies? I love the idea already."

Date: 2020-07-16 02:17 am (UTC)Mantis was one for more practical uses of a lot of foods. He’d mix up just about any kind of tea before popping an endless round of pills. Putting that aside, he did have some knowledge of how to put in stitches and dress wounds, so his military training wasn’t completely for naught. A healthy fear of doctors made him very gifted at fixing up most of his own problems.
“Magic always belonged to women because they were the ones who often had the most time and need to learn to use plants to feed and heal. They had brains that most men did not, but there are plenty of men in old stories who were powerful magicians.” He swishes his hand in a circle and starts to float off the ground. “Hell, even I could be called a magician by someone who doesn’t know the difference between my powers and sorcery.”
Mantis spins in a quick circle. “Pies are easy to make. They’re a concentration of calories and flavor. Mincemeat is the easiest kind to make. The fruit-based ones are beastly and need far more time over a stove.”

Date: 2020-07-27 11:56 am (UTC)Loki would often follow Frigga around in their garden, picking herbs and watching her weave complex magics with the herbs she picked. He had to evolve his magic with his years of experience to progress to actually healing someone. Even now, Loki was a fraction of the healer Frigga was, since he delved into illusion over healing magics in the end. They were much more fun and akin to his mischievous nature. But still, he treasured those years spent with his mother on Asgard learning the craft.
"Perhaps, if I brought back some rabbit meat from a hunt, you could procure a pie with it?"

Date: 2020-08-02 03:05 am (UTC)Mantis remembers being in fields and herding animals around with dogs. There were a lot of sheep, but goats and cattle and pigs as well. Everything was from the earth and done by hand, and he's found it impossible to fully walk away from that kind of living. It calls him back and then he's busy on a rooftop trying to start a small farm.
"Rabbit pie? Of course. I've got herbs and spices I can use to flavor it, too."

Date: 2020-08-04 10:33 am (UTC)Over the centuries Loki had used a variety of flora for healing poultices and bandages. Some worked better than others. Animal tendon was also good for binding together wooden splints and the like. Many a battle wound had Thor gained when hunting with wild boar and other equally dangerous foes. Loki had been there on hand armed with his magic and knowledge to fix his brother up.
"This sounds like a date for dinner, Mantis."
Loki offered his friend a coy smile and knew the masked man would probably enjoy the company.

Date: 2020-08-09 04:24 am (UTC)Mantis did pick up some useful skills as a matter of necessity, though. He knows how to make stitches happen as a last-ditch effort and how to splint a bone with just about anything. The skills are ingrained into his muscle memory, even now.
"Dinner...date?" He knows Loki means well, but did he have to phrase it like that? "I might need to change some of my outfit, but... It could be fun."
